Where it sits
The soft strip at the front of the nose, between the nostrils. Placed well, it goes through soft tissue, not cartilage.
Most noses do. We find the right spot at the table.
A septum placed well does not go through cartilage. It goes through a thin strip of soft tissue at the front of the septum, under the cartilage and behind the tip of the nose. Through that strip it heals like other soft tissue. Through the cartilage above it, it is more painful and slower, so finding the strip is the whole job.
Where the strip sits differs from nose to nose, and that is checked before anything is marked. A deviated septum rarely rules the piercing out, though it can shift the placement slightly off centre.

Most piercings here get a downsize at four weeks, where a long post is swapped for a shorter one. A septum usually does not need one. The checkup still stands, it is free, and it goes in the book before you leave.

What happens at the appointment
Nothing is pierced until you have seen the spot and agreed with it.
First, the tray. You sit at the low table with a mirror in your hand. We look at the nose, find the spot, and you choose the ring if you would like gold. Nothing clinical is out yet.
Then, one needle. Under a minute, and the ring goes in at the same moment.
Forty-five minutes, one client in the room. Nobody walks in on your visit.
Can you hide it for work?
Yes, once you are comfortable handling it. The starter ring flips up inside the nose, and from the front there is nothing to see. That is one of the reasons people choose this spot when a visible piercing would be a problem at work.
Not every style flips. A decorative clicker will not, so say when you book if hiding it matters, and the first piece is chosen with that in mind.
If you take it out
A healed septum is a forgiving one to change your mind about. The channel does not close over quickly once the jewellery is out, and it can often be opened again later without piercing it fresh.
