Daith
piercing
The inner fold of cartilage above the ear canal. A striking placement — best paired with rings and seamed hoops.
Inner fold, distinct weight
The daith sits in the innermost fold of cartilage, just above the ear canal. It's one of the more anatomy-dependent placements we do — the crux fold needs to be defined enough to support clean jewellery fit.
Because of the angle and depth, daith is pierced almost exclusively with rings — small, close-fit hoops that sit flush to the anatomy. A straight barbell rarely suits the placement long-term.
We assess the fold before we commit to the placement. If the anatomy doesn't support a clean daith, we will tell you — and suggest alternatives that will serve you better long-term.
Exactly what to expect
What healing looks like
Tenderness, some swelling
Normal. Sleep on the opposite side strictly. Saline rinses morning and evening.
Inflammation reduces
Continue saline rinses. No swimming, saunas. Avoid touching with hands or phone.
We see you back
Complimentary downsize appointment. We fit a smaller-diameter ring as swelling has settled.
Remodelling complete
The channel is stable. You can now change rings freely or fit a decorative BVLA piece.
Nine rules. No exceptions
Cartilage heals slowly because it's avascular — blood doesn't reach the tissue the way it does in a lobe. Following these precisely is the difference between a clean heal and months of trouble.
- 01Saline rinse twice dailySterile saline only. No hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or tea tree oil.
- 02Do not twist or rotateThe jewellery should move only when you downsize it. Rotation tears fresh tissue.
- 03Sleep on the opposite sidePressure during sleep is the leading cause of cartilage bumps. A travel pillow helps.
- 04No pools, oceans, or saunasFor at least six weeks. Water carries bacteria; heat delays healing.
- 05Phones kept cleanA phone against the ear is one of the dirtiest objects to contact a fresh piercing.
- 06Dry with clean tissue onlyPat dry — never rub. Bath towels harbour bacteria and snag on jewellery.
- 07Return for downsize at 3 monthsIncluded free. A long post on a healed piercing is what causes long-term bumps.
- 08No jewellery changes before 6 monthsUnless we do it for you. DIY changes on partially healed cartilage re-start healing.
Daith work
Questions we're asked, often
If your question isn't here, bring it to the consultation. We'd rather answer it in person.
Does it hurt?
Daith is a thicker section of cartilage so the piercing takes a moment longer than a helix — sharp pressure rather than lingering pain. Soreness lasts a few weeks.
Is it really a migraine cure?
There's no clinical evidence that it is. We won't pierce on that claim. If you like the aesthetic, we'll pierce it.
Can I wear a barbell in a daith?
Rarely well. The fold's geometry means rings sit cleanest. We'll show you both during consultation.
Can I sleep on it eventually?
Yes — once fully healed, around nine months. Before that, side-sleeping on the fresh placement is the most reliable way to get a bump.
Will a BVLA piece fit in a daith?
Yes — after healing and downsize. BVLA makes rings in small diameters specifically suited to daith anatomy.
Book your daith
All placements are by appointment. Expect a 45-minute slot, start to finish — with full anatomy consult, sterile placement, and aftercare included.
Jewellery for your
daith piercing
The daith suits continuous rings and seam rings — pieces that wrap cleanly around the innermost fold of cartilage. We'll measure your anatomy at consultation before recommending a gauge and diameter.
