Platinum Point vs Metal Magic Piercings: an honest comparison

We have a commercial interest in you choosing Platinum Point, and that is the context for everything below. This page is written by one of the two practices being compared, and you should read it that way. Metal Magic's prices and memberships were checked against their own website and the two associations' member directories on 4 September 2026. Both are dedicated piercing practices rather than tattoo shops with a piercing chair, and the useful question is which kind of appointment you want.

Where Metal Magic is stronger

Metal Magic are members of the Association of Professional Piercers and the Australasian United Professional Piercers. We checked both associations' member directories on 4 September 2026 and they are listed in both. Their claim to be the only Auckland practice holding both memberships is accurate. Platinum Point claims no memberships. If membership matters to you, that is a real point in their favour.

They also carry a wide range of brands and materials, they are in the CBD, and they take walk-ins when their booked appointments allow. If you want choice across makers and materials, or you want to call in without booking ahead, they are the better fit, and we would rather say so.

The appointment

Platinum Point is appointment only, with one client in the room at a time. A piercing appointment is 45 minutes with one piercer, the same person from the first conversation to the fitted piece. The spot is marked with you in the mirror before anything else happens. The needle is single-use and sterile, opened in front of you, and you pay at the end with no deposit.

We are open seven days for this. Metal Magic are open Wednesday to Saturday and take walk-ins where their schedule allows, which answers a different need. If you want to be seen without booking ahead, that is theirs. If you want a booked appointment with one person throughout, on any day of the week, that is ours.

Jewellery: breadth and depth

Metal Magic carry a wide range of brands and materials. If you want choice across makers, that breadth is the reason to go there.

Platinum Point pierces in implant-grade titanium or in solid 14k gold from Body Vision Los Angeles. Every gold piece here comes from the same maker, so the gold and the finish match across pieces added years apart. Gold is pierced fresh: you choose the piece first, we find the spot, and the piercing goes straight in gold. Any BVLA design, with any stone, can also be made to order in about six weeks.

Planning a whole ear

Both practices help you plan more than one piercing at a time. Metal Magic offer free sessions across all the materials they carry.

At Platinum Point there are two ways in. The Gold Viewing is free: 30 minutes at the tray, trying pieces on, with no needle. The Designed Ear is an hour with Tom planning the whole ear in BVLA gold. It is $150, and the $150 comes off your first piercing. Ours is planned in gold only, so if you want a mix of materials, theirs is the better offer.

Children

Both practices pierce earlobes from age five. At Platinum Point a parent is in the room, both lobes are $200 in titanium, and gold is priced the same as for adults. See children's ear piercing.

What it costs

This is the comparison most people want and the one most easily got wrong, because the two practices quote on different bases. Metal Magic's fees exclude jewellery. Platinum Point's prices include it. Putting $40 next to $150 compares two different things.

Platinum Point's prices are the whole price: the piercing, the jewellery, and the downsize checkup at about four weeks. Gold is the piece you choose plus $40, never under $350. Full detail is on prices.

To compare them fairly, add the cost of a piece of jewellery to every Metal Magic figure. What that adds depends on what you choose, and we are not going to guess at their jewellery prices, so ask them. In titanium the two may land closer together than the headline numbers suggest. In solid gold we will usually be the more expensive room, and we would rather you knew that before you walked in.

One more difference: Metal Magic require a deposit on all piercing and jewellery-change appointments, non-refundable within 12 hours. We take no deposit, and you pay at the end. Both of us ask for photo ID at the appointment.

Reviews

Both practices have Google reviews. We are not going to characterise another practice's reviews, and you should not take either one's word for its own reputation. Open Google Maps, read both listings, and pay more attention to what the middling reviews say than to the five-star ones.

Who each practice suits

Metal Magic Piercings is the better choice if you:

• Want choice across many brands and materials
• Place weight on membership of the Association of Professional Piercers and the Australasian United Professional Piercers
• Prefer walk-in flexibility, or you are in the CBD

Platinum Point is the better choice if you:

• Want a booked appointment with one piercer from start to finish
• Are planning a whole ear in gold
• Want to be pierced straight into solid gold rather than upgrading later
• Need a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday appointment
• Want a gay-owned practice

A balanced conclusion

These are not the same business at two quality tiers. Metal Magic is a broad, well-credentialed practice with a wide choice of jewellery. Platinum Point is narrow on purpose: titanium or BVLA gold, one client at a time, one piercer from the first conversation to the fitted piece.

The question that separates them is what you want the appointment to be. If you want range and flexibility, they will serve you well. If you want to choose a gold piece first and have it pierced in, come and see the tray, or book a piercing.
