Nostril piercing in Auckland — what to know before you book

5 May 2026 7 min read By Platinum Point

A nostril piercing is one of the most visible things you can do — it sits at the centre of the face, in close proximity to the eyes, and it reads immediately in any context. Which is exactly why placement precision matters more here than almost anywhere else. A millimetre off in the wrong direction changes the entire way the piercing relates to your face. Get it right and it can look as though it has always been there. Get it wrong and no amount of beautiful jewellery fixes it.

At Platinum Point, every nostril piercing in Auckland begins with an anatomy assessment before any mark is made. We work with clients from Parnell, Newmarket, Ponsonby, Remuera, the North Shore, and further across Auckland. The same questions come up repeatedly, so this guide covers everything worth knowing before you book.

Anatomy first — why placement is the most critical decision

Nostril anatomy varies significantly from person to person. The width of the nose, the depth of the alar crease (the fold where the nostril meets the cheek), the thickness of the cartilage, and the curvature of the rim all affect where a piercing will sit well and how different jewellery styles will look once healed.

Placement considerations include:

  • Height on the alar: Too high sits in firmer cartilage and can be harder to heal; too low sits in thin tissue and limits jewellery options. The ideal placement typically follows the alar crease.
  • Distance from the rim: Affects whether a ring will sit flush against the nose or protrude outward. This needs to be assessed against the specific ring diameter you want to wear long-term.
  • Laterality: Left vs right is personal preference — there is no traditional significance in New Zealand. Some clients have a preferred side based on symmetry with existing piercings; others choose based on which side photographs better for them.

At Platinum Point, the mark is made and then confirmed with you in a mirror from multiple angles before anything proceeds. If it does not look exactly right, we adjust. This is non-negotiable — a nostril placement is difficult to correct once done.

What happens at your appointment

A nostril appointment at Platinum Point runs around 30 minutes. The sequence: anatomy assessment and placement discussion, marking and mirror confirmation, needle piercing with starter jewellery inserted simultaneously, aftercare briefing.

We use ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium as starter jewellery — specifically a flat-back labret or a short titanium post with a flat back, depending on your anatomy. This sits flush against the inside of the nostril and does not catch on the interior nasal tissue during healing.

The initial post is longer than the jewellery you will wear long-term. Nostril tissue, like all piercing sites, swells in the first week or two. The longer post accommodates this. You return for a downsize at 10–14 weeks once the swelling has fully resolved and the initial fistula has formed.

How painful is a nostril piercing?

The honest answer: it varies, but most people are surprised by how manageable it is. The nostril piercing typically produces a sharp sensation that causes reflexive watering of the eyes — not from pain, but from how nasal tissue responds to stimulus. It is brief. Most clients are more apprehensive during the marking and anatomy assessment than they are about the piercing itself.

What you can do to make the appointment easier: eat beforehand, come well-rested, and avoid booking the appointment immediately before an important event in case of minor post-piercing redness or swelling.

Healing timeline for a nostril piercing

Nostril tissue is thicker than lobe tissue and slower to heal, but considerably faster than upper ear cartilage. A realistic timeline:

  • Days 1–5: Swelling, tenderness, and some clear or whitish discharge. Normal.
  • Weeks 2–6: Surface healing progresses. The piercing may appear healed from the outside while still forming internally. Do not change jewellery during this period.
  • 10–14 weeks: Return for your downsize. The longer initial post is replaced with a shorter one suited to the healed piercing.
  • 6–9 months: Full healing. The fistula is stable and fine gold jewellery — BVLA flat-backs, delicate rings, or shaped pieces — can be fitted.

Factors that slow nostril healing: sleeping on the pierced side, touching or picking at the piercing, makeup and skincare products entering the piercing site (particularly products with fragrance or active ingredients), and poor-quality jewellery causing a low-grade reaction.

Aftercare for a nostril piercing

Nostril aftercare requires the same discipline as any piercing but with one additional consideration: the nose is active. You breathe through it, blow it, wipe it. Keeping aftercare consistent while managing this is the main challenge.

  • Saline spray: Sterile 0.9% sodium chloride wound wash, twice daily. Spray directly onto the piercing, allow 30 seconds, air-dry or pat dry with clean paper towel.
  • No nose-blowing over the piercing: In the first weeks, be gentle. Excess pressure can irritate the healing fistula.
  • Skincare and makeup: Keep products away from the piercing site. Rinse the area with clean water after applying moisturiser or sunscreen.
  • No twisting: Do not rotate or move the jewellery. This is old advice that disrupts healing tissue.
  • Glasses: If you wear glasses, be aware of frames that rest near the piercing site. Pressure and friction from frames can cause localised irritation.

If an irritation bump develops near the entry point, contact us before attempting to treat it. Most bumps are a response to pressure, poor jewellery, or aftercare products — not infection — and resolve with simple adjustments. Do not apply tea tree oil, antiseptic creams, or alcohol to a healing nostril piercing.

Nostril stud vs nose ring — what to wear

This is one of the most common questions we hear from clients across Auckland. The short version: start with a flat-back labret stud, transition to a ring once fully healed.

During healing, a ring creates movement every time you speak, smile, or breathe. That movement disrupts the forming fistula and delays healing — often significantly. A flat-back labret sits stable in the tissue with no lever arm, which is why it heals faster and with fewer complications.

Once healed at 6–9 months, ring options include:

  • Seamless rings: A continuous ring in solid gold. Clean and minimal — one of the most elegant nostril options when the diameter is sized correctly for the anatomy.
  • Clicker rings: A hinged ring with a snap closure. Easier to open and close than a seamless ring; good for clients who want to change jewellery occasionally.
  • Circular barbells: A horseshoe-shaped piece with two threaded ends. More visible than a seamless ring; suits a bolder aesthetic.

Flat-back studs with decorative ends remain popular for healed nostril piercings too — a fine diamond-set BVLA end sits elegantly at the nostril without drawing as much attention as a ring.

Nostril piercing jewellery at Platinum Point

All jewellery at Platinum Point is BVLA — solid 14k or 18k gold and 950 platinum, handcrafted in Los Angeles. For nostril piercings, our most popular choices are:

  • Fine prong-set or bezel-set gem ends (diamond, sapphire, opal) in yellow or white gold
  • Small solid gold disc ends — understated and elegant
  • Seamless gold rings once healed, in gauges and diameters sized precisely to the anatomy
  • Marquise and leaf-form gold ends for clients who want something more distinctive

All BVLA pieces are available to view on our BVLA page and in our jewellery catalogue.

Nostril vs high nostril vs rhino — understanding your options

The standard nostril piercing sits in the alar cartilage, following the curve of the nostril. This is what most people mean when they say nose piercing. A few related placements worth knowing:

  • High nostril: Placed higher on the nose, above the alar crease, in firmer cartilage. Heals differently and suits a narrower range of jewellery — typically a flat-back stud. We assess anatomy carefully before advising on this placement.
  • Septum: Pierced through the columella (the soft tissue between the nostrils), not the cartilage. A different placement with a different healing timeline and jewellery set. More concealable — a septum ring can be flipped upward inside the nose.
  • Rhino / vertical nose tip: A surface-style piercing through the tip of the nose. Less common, with specific anatomy requirements and a longer healing timeline. We advise on a case-by-case basis.

Common questions about nostril piercing in Auckland

How long does a nostril piercing take to heal?

Nostril piercings typically reach initial healing at 3–4 months, at which point a downsize is appropriate. Full healing, where the fistula is stable enough for fine gold or a ring, takes 6–9 months. Cartilage tissue in the nostril heals faster than upper ear cartilage but slower than lobe tissue.

How painful is a nostril piercing?

Most people describe a nostril piercing as a sharp pressure that causes reflexive watering of the eyes — not from pain, but from the nasal tissue response. The discomfort is brief. Soreness and mild tenderness are normal for the first few days.

Can I get a nose ring instead of a stud to start?

No. A flat-back labret or straight post is the appropriate starter jewellery for a healing nostril piercing. Rings create constant movement in the healing fistula, which delays healing and commonly causes irritation bumps. A ring can be fitted once the piercing is fully healed at 6–9 months.

How much does nostril piercing cost in Auckland?

At Platinum Point in Parnell, nostril piercing includes the service and implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium starter jewellery. BVLA solid gold jewellery upgrades start from $180 per piece. See platinumpoint.nz/pricing for full pricing.

What is the best placement for a nostril piercing?

Placement depends on your individual anatomy — the shape and width of your nose, the position of the alar crease, and the jewellery style you want long-term. At Platinum Point, every nostril piercing begins with an anatomy assessment and the mark is confirmed by you before anything proceeds.
