Threadless jewellery is now the professional standard for high-quality piercing studios worldwide — including at Platinum Point, where every piece we carry is threadless. The reasons for this are practical, not aesthetic. Understanding how the system works makes it easier to care for your piercing, manage your jewellery, and make informed purchasing decisions.
This guide explains the mechanics, the clinical rationale, and what threadless jewellery looks like in everyday use.
What threadless jewellery is
Threadless jewellery is a two-part system: a flat-back post and a separate decorative top. The post sits inside the piercing — a smooth titanium or gold bar with a flat disc at the rear that rests against the back of the ear. The decorative top — the visible element at the front of the piercing — has a small pin extending from it. That pin is slightly bent, creating tension when it is inserted into the hollow end of the post.
The tension is what holds everything in place. The top is secure under normal conditions but can be removed cleanly by pulling it straight out, releasing the pin from the post. No rotation. No unscrewing. No tools. The mechanism is entirely in the slight bend of the pin and the friction it creates inside the post.
Critically: there are no threads anywhere in the piercing channel. The post surface that passes through the fistula is entirely smooth.
How it differs from threaded jewellery
There are two other systems in common use, and understanding the differences clarifies why threadless is preferred.
Externally threaded jewellery has threads on the outside of the post — the screw mechanism is on the surface that passes through the healing tissue. Every time the jewellery is inserted or removed, those threads pass directly through the fistula, abrading the channel. This is the least appropriate system for healing tissue. It is common in low-grade piercing jewellery and in older studio environments. It should not be used in any healing piercing.
Internally threaded jewellery places the threads inside the hollow post, meaning the decorative end screws into the post rather than onto it. The post surface itself is smooth. This is significantly better than external threading and is used by some reputable studios. The limitation is that threads still require contact and cleaning precision — and over time, fine threads can wear or cross-thread.
Threadless jewellery removes threads from the equation entirely. The post is smooth. The top attaches by pressure. The result is the cleanest possible surface against healing tissue and the simplest mechanism for removal and reattachment.
Why piercers recommend it
The clinical advantages of threadless jewellery are direct:
- Smooth channel surface. No threads pass through the fistula during insertion or removal. The healing tissue contacts only a smooth post surface throughout the entire healing period.
- Easier removal. A threadless top can be removed without rotating the post — which would disturb the healing channel. Pull straight out, and the post remains stationary in the piercing.
- No debris accumulation. Threaded mechanisms create recesses where lymph fluid, skin cells, and cleaning products accumulate. A smooth post has no such areas.
- Interchangeable tops on a single post. Once the piercing is healed, the decorative top can be changed without touching the post at all. The post stays in place; only the visible element changes.
All BVLA jewellery at Platinum Point uses the threadless system. This is one of the reasons BVLA is the professional benchmark: the system's design is consistent with clinical best practice, not just aesthetic quality.
Checking and maintaining tension
The bent pin that holds the top in place creates a specific amount of resistance when inserted. That resistance can decrease over time — particularly with frequent changes or if the pin is repeatedly bent and straightened. A top that feels noticeably looser than when first fitted should be checked by a piercer.
A piercer can re-bend the pin to restore the correct tension in seconds. This is not a fault in the jewellery — it is a normal characteristic of the system, and one that is easily managed. If the top feels loose, bring it in before it falls out. A lost BVLA end is an expensive problem to avoid.
During healing, the initial titanium flat-back is fitted and checked for tension at your downsize appointment. By the time the piercing is mature and you are changing to BVLA tops, you will have a reliable sense of what secure tension feels like.
What threadless looks like in practice
The most common configuration is the flat-back labret: a post with a flat disc at the rear and a threadless top at the front. This is the standard starter jewellery for most piercings at Platinum Point — a smooth titanium post with an appropriately sized flat disc and a simple threadless gem end.
The decorative tops available in the BVLA range are extensive:
- Single-stone ends — a bezel or prong-set diamond, sapphire, opal, or tourmaline in solid gold
- Cluster ends — multiple stones in an arranged setting, often with a central larger stone surrounded by smaller ones
- Shaped ends — sculptural forms: leaves, crescents, botanical shapes, geometric pieces
- Chain attachments — decorative drops or ear chains that attach to a flat-back post and drape across the ear
The practical consequence of this system is that a single post — correctly sized for your piercing — can be paired with many different tops over the lifetime of the piercing. Clients build a jewellery wardrobe around their piercings rather than purchasing complete new pieces for every aesthetic direction. This is both economically sensible and more sustainable.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my jewellery is threadless?
Pull the top gently — it releases from the post with a slight pull, with no rotation required. If you need to unscrew the end to remove it, the jewellery is threaded. Most jewellery from professional studios purchased in the last five years is threadless or internally threaded; older pieces and low-cost jewellery are more often externally threaded.
Can I change threadless tops myself?
Yes, once the piercing is fully healed. Grasp the flat back disc through the ear with one hand to stabilise the post, then pull the decorative top straight out with the other. To reinsert, align the pin with the hollow post and press in until you feel resistance from the bent pin. The technique is straightforward once you have done it once — worth having a piercer demonstrate the first time so you can feel the correct resistance level.
Is threadless jewellery more expensive?
It can be. BVLA threadless pieces are premium jewellery — solid gold and 950 platinum with genuine stones. The system's longevity and versatility make it excellent value over time: one correctly sized post can hold many different tops. You are building a wardrobe rather than replacing complete pieces with each aesthetic change.
