Luxury piercing jewellery is a genuinely unusual gift category — unusual in a way that matters practically. Unlike a ring, a necklace, or a bracelet, body jewellery for a piercing cannot simply be selected, wrapped, and handed over. It has to fit a specific placement in a specific ear, it has to be the correct gauge and post length for that person's anatomy, and it has to be fitted by a piercer. The studio is part of the gift in a way that does not apply to conventional jewellery.
This guide is for people who want to give a BVLA piece — or the experience of choosing one — to someone who would appreciate it. It covers how gifting works in practice, what pieces are worth considering, and what to discuss with the studio before committing to anything.
The jewellery change appointment as a gift
The most practical way to gift a piece of fine body jewellery is to gift the appointment alongside it. Contact Platinum Point, describe the recipient's existing piercings and as much as you know about their healing stage, and either select a specific piece with our help or arrange a gift credit. The recipient then comes in for a fitting — the piercer selects the correctly sized version of the piece, fits it professionally, and the sizing problem is solved entirely.
This approach has a secondary benefit: the recipient gets the experience of being in the studio, handling the piece in person, and making any final decisions with the piercer present. For jewellery this considered, that is the right way to receive it.

BVLA pieces worth giving
BVLA — Body Vision Los Angeles — produces solid gold and platinum body jewellery handcrafted in Los Angeles. Every piece is made in solid 14k or 18k yellow, white, or rose gold, or in 950 platinum, set with genuine stones. The following are specific styles from the BVLA range that work across a variety of healed placements and represent considered gift choices.
Single bezel-set opal end, 14k yellow gold
A round or oval opal in a minimal bezel setting — the metal wraps the stone's circumference with no prongs. The stone sits low and flush, which makes this one of the most versatile ends in the BVLA range: it suits the lobe, the helix, the conch, the tragus, and the forward helix without competing with adjacent pieces. Yellow gold with a white or grey opal reads as warm without being heavy. This is the piece to choose when you know the recipient has multiple piercings and you are unsure which will be upgraded first.
Prong-set diamond end, 14k white gold
A round brilliant diamond in a four- or six-prong setting. White gold with a white stone produces the highest contrast and the most light return of anything in the BVLA range. It reads clearly at distance and holds its presence whether worn as a single piece or within a composition of multiple piercings. This is a higher price point than the opal end, and the visual statement is proportionally more significant. Suited to the lobe, helix, or conch in a healed piercing.
BVLA chain connecting piece
A delicate chain that connects two adjacent healed piercings — typically a lobe to a second lobe, or a lobe to a lower helix. The chain is anchored at both ends by threaded ends that screw into internally threaded labret posts. The visual effect is a deliberate compositional link between two points on the ear. This is a gift that only makes sense for a recipient with two adjacent healed piercings in the right proximity — confirm this before purchasing.
Hinged seam ring, 18k yellow gold
A continuous ring with a hinged segment closure — it opens for fitting and closes seamlessly, with no visible join when worn. The 18k yellow gold version is warmer and slightly richer in colour than 14k. Seam rings suit a healed conch, daith, rook, or upper helix. They read as architectural within an ear composition — a circular form among flat-backs and ends. The gauge and diameter must be matched to the recipient's placement, which is one more reason to involve the studio in the selection process.
What to consider before gifting
Three factors determine whether a specific piece will work for the recipient:
- Healing stage. Body jewellery upgrades are only appropriate for fully healed piercings — a minimum of six months for lobes, twelve or more for cartilage. Gifting a BVLA piece to someone with an unhealed piercing creates an awkward gap between the gift and the point when it can actually be worn. If you are uncertain, a gift credit or appointment booking is a more practical solution than a specific piece.
- Metal family. Most people with a considered ear composition work within a single metal colour — all yellow gold, or a deliberate mix of yellow and white. Introducing rose gold to an ear that is all yellow gold creates a compositional inconsistency that the recipient will notice, even if they do not say so. Ask, or choose neutral (white diamond in white gold works across most compositions).
- Placement specificity. A conch ring is useless without a healed conch. A daith piece requires a daith. Do not assume a piece suits any placement — confirm the recipient has the relevant piercing before selecting anything placement-specific.
How to approach it at Platinum Point
Call 09 949 0940 or visit us at 389 Parnell Road, Parnell. We can discuss what you know about the recipient's situation, recommend suitable pieces from our current stock, reserve a piece, or set up a gift appointment booking. Named best studio in Auckland by Auckland Magazine, we are New Zealand's only exclusive BVLA studio — the only place in New Zealand where these pieces can be purchased.
We do not sell BVLA online. The pieces need to be seen in person, and the fitting needs to be done correctly. Both of those things require the studio.
If you are buying for yourself
The same considerations apply. Know your healing stage before booking an upgrade appointment. Consider your existing metal family and how a new piece will interact with what is already on your ear. Use the Ear Builder to visualise placements, or try Mood to Metal to identify a style direction before coming in-studio. A curation consultation is the most efficient way to plan multiple upgrades — you leave with a full sequence, specific piece recommendations, and a realistic timeline.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a BVLA piece online to give as a gift?
BVLA is not sold online anywhere in New Zealand. Platinum Point is the country's only exclusive BVLA studio — the only place in NZ where these pieces are available. Contact us at 09 949 0940 or visit the studio to discuss a specific piece or arrange a gift appointment.
What if I don't know what size the recipient needs?
Contact us before purchasing. Post length, gauge, and ring diameter vary by placement and by individual anatomy. We can advise based on what you know about the recipient's piercings — and in most cases, the cleanest approach is a gift appointment where the recipient comes in for a fitting with our piercer present.
Is there a minimum spend for gift appointments?
No minimum. Call 09 949 0940 or visit us in-studio to discuss what you have in mind. We can advise on suitable pieces, reserve stock, or arrange a gift appointment booking for the recipient.
