Best piercing studios in New Zealand 2026

11 May 2026 8 min read By Platinum Point, Parnell

A disclosure before anything else: we are one of the studios discussed in this article. We've written it because the question of how to identify a quality piercing studio in New Zealand is genuinely difficult — there is limited statutory regulation, no mandatory qualification requirement, and a wide range of practices operating under the same industry label. We'll be direct about our own position while being fair to the broader landscape.

This is a criteria-based guide. The goal is to give you a framework for evaluating any studio — in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or anywhere else in New Zealand.

What makes a piercing studio "best" — the criteria

The question isn't just which studio has the best aesthetic or the most followers. It's which studios operate to a standard that produces safe outcomes, good healing, and jewellery that your body tolerates long-term. These are the criteria that matter:

  • AUPP membership: The Australasian Union of Professional Piercers is the regional affiliate of the APP (Association of Professional Piercers), the global standard-setter. AUPP membership is voluntary in New Zealand — not every professional piercer holds it, and not every holder of it is equally skilled — but it establishes a meaningful floor on practice standards.
  • Sterilisation method: Autoclave sterilisation of all reusable equipment is the standard. Jewellery and tools should be processed in a validated autoclave and stored in sterile packaging until use.
  • Jewellery materials: Starter jewellery for healing piercings should be ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium or solid gold at a minimum. Studios using surgical steel (not the same as implant-grade), acrylic, or mystery alloys are not operating to current safety standards, regardless of price point.
  • Needle, not gun: Piercing guns cannot be sterilised between clients and cause blunt trauma to tissue. All professional piercers use single-use sterile needles.
  • Consultation: A studio that marks and pierces without an anatomy assessment is skipping the step that determines whether the piercing will heal correctly and look right long-term. Assessment and mark confirmation before any piercing begins is non-negotiable at a quality studio.
  • Aftercare guidance: Evidence-based aftercare (sterile saline, minimal intervention) should be standard. Studios prescribing rotation, antiseptic cream, or alcohol-based products are working from outdated protocols.
  • Jewellery brands: The jewellery a studio stocks is a clear signal of its standards. Studios carrying BVLA, Anatometal, Industrial Strength, or similar professional brands are investing in materials that are safe for healing and designed to specification. Studios carrying unbranded or mass-produced jewellery are not.

The best studio for your needs depends on how these criteria apply to your priorities. A studio that scores well across all of them is likely to give you a better outcome than one that scores well on only a few.

Auckland

Auckland has a stronger studio landscape than most New Zealand cities, partly due to the size of the market and partly because a few studios have pushed the standard up in recent years.

Platinum Point Piercing — Parnell

We are based at 389 Parnell Road in Parnell. We are an appointment-only studio, which means every client receives unhurried time with an experienced piercer. Both of our piercers — Thomas Manning and Kat Thurlow — hold AUPP membership. Thomas brings a background as a Clinical Trials Aseptic Pharmacy Technician, which informs the pharmaceutical-grade sterilisation protocols we operate to. Kat is fluent in Taiwanese Mandarin and brings a welcoming approach to a broad range of clients. We are a gay-owned business.

We are New Zealand's only exclusive BVLA studio — the only studio in the country stocking exclusively Body Vision Los Angeles jewellery, and carrying the largest BVLA inventory in New Zealand. Auckland Magazine named us the best piercing studio in Auckland. Our focus is ear curation: composed, intentional multi-piercing arrangements rather than individual piercings in isolation.

We have a commercial interest in this list, and you should weigh that accordingly. The credentials are verifiable.

Adorn Body Piercing — multiple Auckland locations

Adorn operates across multiple Auckland locations and offers accessible, walk-in friendly piercing services with a broad jewellery range. Their multi-site model makes them widely available across the city. For clients who need flexibility and accessibility — including walk-in availability — Adorn is a reasonable option. Their safety standards are generally sound. They are not a specialist ear curation studio in the way that Platinum Point is, but for a straightforward lobe or cartilage piercing, they are a credible choice.

Auckland's broader studio landscape also includes smaller independent practitioners worth researching directly. The AUPP directory is the most reliable starting point for identifying studios whose piercers have committed to professional standards.

Wellington

Wellington has established studios with credible practitioners. We are Auckland-based and do not directly audit Wellington studios, so we won't make specific recommendations we can't stand behind. The AUPP directory lists Wellington practitioners who have committed to professional standards — that's the most reliable resource for Wellington recommendations. Apply the criteria above when making your own assessment.

Christchurch

Christchurch's studio landscape has developed steadily in recent years. The same applies here as Wellington: we are not positioned to make specific recommendations for studios we haven't directly assessed. Check the AUPP directory for Christchurch practitioners, ask studios directly about their jewellery materials and sterilisation methods, and apply the criteria framework.

What to look for wherever you are

The criteria framework applies regardless of city. When assessing any studio:

  • Ask whether their piercers hold AUPP membership — or equivalent APP membership for practitioners trained internationally
  • Ask what materials their starter jewellery is made from (implant-grade titanium or solid gold; reject any answer involving surgical steel without implant-grade specification)
  • Ask whether they use needles or guns (guns are not acceptable at a professional studio)
  • Ask about their sterilisation process (autoclave, spore-tested, individually packaged instruments)
  • Observe whether they mark the placement and confirm it with you before proceeding

A studio that can answer all of these questions clearly and confidently is a studio worth trusting with your body.

Why Platinum Point leads in Auckland

The Auckland Magazine recognition matters as an external data point. But the underlying reasons are operational: pharmaceutical-grade sterilisation protocols derived from clinical pharmacy practice, exclusive use of BVLA jewellery (the global benchmark for fine body jewellery), an appointment-only model that gives every client full consultation time, AUPP-member piercers, and a studio environment that is explicitly welcoming to LGBTQ+ clients and clients from across Auckland's diverse communities.

Thomas Manning's background as a Clinical Trials Aseptic Pharmacy Technician is directly relevant to how we approach sterilisation and contamination control — these aren't protocols borrowed from general piercing convention; they're drawn from clinical practice. That background is unusual in the industry and produces a measurably higher standard of sterile technique.

If you're in Auckland, you can reserve a session directly. If you're elsewhere in New Zealand, we genuinely recommend starting with the AUPP directory and applying the criteria above. The right studio for you is the one that can demonstrate it meets those standards — wherever it is.

Frequently asked questions

Is Platinum Point NZ's best piercing studio?

Auckland Magazine named us the best piercing studio in Auckland. We'll let the work speak to any broader claim. What we can confirm: AUPP membership for both piercers, pharmaceutical-grade sterilisation, New Zealand's only exclusive BVLA studio, and an appointment-only model that gives every client unhurried time with an experienced piercer.

How do I find a good piercer in my city?

The AUPP directory is a reliable starting point. Beyond that, ask studios directly about their jewellery materials, their sterilisation method, and whether they use needles or cartridge guns. Willingness to answer these questions clearly and completely is itself a meaningful signal about how a studio operates.

Does studio location matter?

Quality matters more than proximity. A longer trip to a studio with rigorous sterilisation standards, appropriate jewellery, and experienced piercers will produce a better outcome than a convenient studio with lower standards. A healed piercing lasts years — the commute to get it done properly is worth it.

Is more expensive always better?

Not automatically. But the correlation between premium materials and premium outcomes is strong. Studios using solid gold and implant-grade titanium, maintaining autoclave sterilisation, and employing AUPP members invest in materials and infrastructure that lower-cost studios typically don't. Price is rarely the right primary filter — but it reflects real cost differences in how a studio operates.
